The Overlander Train

Overlander train route mapThe Overlander train is an unique train journey through the heart of the North Island travelling between Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, to Wellington, New Zealand's arts and culture capital through 5 unique geographical regions of the North Island.

Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges – all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.

All carriages are centrally heated/air conditioned, with forward facing 'Airline' style reclining seats, with large panoramic windows giving sweeping views of the magnificent North Island.

Interior of the Overlander train obsevation lounge carriageThe Buffet Carriage has a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks and light meals.

The Observation Carriage includes a mix of seating forward facing and lounge style seating. The lounge style seating is arranged at the rear of the glass backed carriage enabling you to enjoy a totally unique Overlander experience.

The Overlander train is reserved seating 'One Class/Non Smoking' service.

The Overlander train operates -

* Daily from 02 September 11 to 29 April 12
* Friday, Saturday and Sunday: 4 May 12 to 23 September 12

Does not operate Christmas Day - 25 December.

You can add to your Scenic Rail Pass, a range of bus and coach passes for travel within New Zealand after travelling on the Overlander train.
