The Overlander Train

Overlander train route mapThe Overlander train is an unique train journey through the heart of the North Island travelling between Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, to Wellington, New Zealand's arts and culture capital through 5 unique geographical regions of the North Island.

Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges – all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.

Interior of the Overlander train obsevation lounge carriageAll carriages are centrally heated/air conditioned, with forward facing 'Airline' style reclining seats, with large panoramic windows giving sweeping views of the magnificent North Island.

The Buffet Carriage has a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks and light meals.

The Observation Carriage includes a mix of seating including lounge style seating. The lounge style seating is arranged at the very rear of this glass backed carriage enabling you to enjoy a totally unique Overlander experience.

The Overlander train is reserved seating 'One Class/Non Smoking' service.

The Overlander train operates -

* Daily from 25 Sep 09 to 02 May 10 and 24 Sep 10 to 01 May 11
* Friday, Saturday and Sunday: 03 May 10 to 19 Sep 10 and 6 May 11 to 25 Sep 11

Does not operate Christmas Day - 25 December.

You can add to your Scenic Rail Pass, a range of bus and coach passes for travel within New Zealand after travelling on the Overlander train.
